About the Book
Rocking in a Free World is a collection of poems on freedom. The book is divided
into four chapters on independence, journey, struggle, and celebration.
Each chapter explores one of these topics with respect to freedom.
Independence cultivates freedom. Journey leads to freedom’s evolution.
Struggle is inevitable and constant. Conflicts occur at so many levels
within and between societies, but in all cases there is celebration of
the victories through art. In a world of free will, freedom is a
priceless natural resource without ownership. Freedom is a natural right
of each one of us. Rocking in a Free World combines various
elements of artistic expression with historical bearing and recent
global events in a poetic articulation of the development of pure
freedom in a human context. About the Author
The
author, Mark Allen Gray, holds a Master of Science degree in computer
science from Johns Hopkins University. Since childhood, Mark has been an
avid student of literature and enjoys writing, in particular, capturing
and condensing life events and emotions into poems. Mark’s style draws
on the creative, logical, and technical elements of computer science in
his professional life and blends them with the raw emotional events and
experiences of his personal life. Mark’s major literary and poetic
influences include Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, Jim
Morrison, and Charles Baudelaire.
Excerpt
The savage Earth presents
itself
To the ether glow of the moon
Surrendering in the autumn of the season
A harvest of summer’s sun
Lifeless products for consumption
The government of the instant swells
And bursts when time stands still
The scene must change
Always
Or we will die
Do you remember
Life in the dream’s eye storm
A world without fire
Dark and cold
A world before Grandmother Spider?
The house is cold without a fire
Build it well
Make it well
Dare to dream
A window on past and future
Touch the rock
Feel the roll
Make peace with the savage Earth
The womb of humanity
Freedom under gravity
Reviews
“I really
enjoyed your style and purpose. Thank you for the wonderful read."
— Heather Froeschl “Without
chaos there is no peace, without struggle there is no celebration. These
are the concepts of a collection of poetry, titled, “Rocking in a Free
World,” by Mark Allen Gray.
Broken into four
chapters, Independence, Journey, Struggle, and Celebration, the author
works to demonstrate his understanding of the feelings behind the words.
In Independence he looks at the freedoms we have and the restrictions
that keep us circled in. In Journey, Mark examines our purpose to Be,
and experience life. In Struggle, he bears witness to inner turmoil and
outer conflict. Celebration is all about that pivotal moment of change,
that moment to rejoice; it regards the rupture of spring and laughter,
and the burst of song.
Gray’s style is point
blank poetry. His words are honest and clear; his meaning is obvious.
His artful intent is complete with self-made symbols for each chapter.
It was a delight to read this book and reflect on his purpose.” — Associate Editor,
